“Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “You Can’t Hurry Love” made The Supremes one of the decade’s most consistent hit machines.
Image and crossover
Motown carefully developed the group’s stage image, television presentation and choreography. That polish helped Black female performers enter spaces in mainstream American entertainment that had often excluded them.
Why they matter
The Supremes helped define the modern girl-group and vocal-pop model while making Motown a global brand. Their success had musical, commercial and cultural significance far beyond the charts.
