Stax in Memphis became the central symbol through Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the M.G.’s and a house sound built around groove, organ and horns.
Muscle Shoals
Studios in Alabama created another distinctive Southern sound, supporting recordings by artists such as Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett with rhythm sections that valued feel over polish.
