The Coasters turned rhythm and blues into miniature comic dramas. Working closely with songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, they built records around characters, dialogue, humor and strong vocal interplay rather than simple romantic themes.

The group’s best records feel almost theatrical. “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Searchin’” and “Young Blood” use sound effects, spoken interjections and tightly written scenes to make each song feel like a short story.

Despite the comedy, the records were musically precise. Strong backbeat, saxophone riffs and carefully arranged group vocals kept The Coasters firmly inside the R&B and rock ’n’ roll world.
