U2 Named 2027 MusiCares Persons of the Year

Archive note: This English edition follows Oldies Radyo’s report of 11 September 2026. Dates and announced plans reflect the information available when that report was written.

U2 will be honored by MusiCares for nearly 50 years of music and humanitarian work around the world. At a special event in Los Angeles, artists from different generations will perform some of the band’s most memorable songs.

U2 Honored for Music and Solidarity

One of rock history’s biggest bands, U2 has been named the 2027 MusiCares Persons of the Year. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. will be honored at a benefit gala at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on February 5, 2027.

MusiCares cited not only U2’s musical legacy, but also the group’s long-running work in areas including global health, disaster relief, addiction recovery, mental health and access to music education.

Artists Will Perform U2 Songs

The event, one of Grammy Week’s major annual gatherings, will feature artists from different generations performing songs from U2’s catalog. The performers will be announced at a later date.

Proceeds from the evening will support MusiCares programs that assist music professionals facing health problems or personal and financial hardship.

For the first time in the organization’s 36-year history, individual tickets will also be sold for the concert portion of the event, allowing music fans outside the traditional invited tables to attend the tribute to U2.

Nearly 50 Years from Dublin to the World

Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 became part of the shared musical memory of several generations with songs including “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “Pride (In the Name of Love),” “With or Without You,” “Where the Streets Have No Name” and “One.”

Especially during the 1980s and 1990s, the band became known for combining stadium-scale rock, powerful visual storytelling and engagement with social issues. Bono was previously named MusiCares Person of the Year as an individual in 2003. This time, the honor goes to all four members of the band together.

Oldies Radyo’s take: U2’s story is about more than major albums and packed concerts. For nearly half a century, the band has kept reminding audiences that music can speak up in the face of the world’s problems. This honor recognizes not only what U2 achieved on stage, but also the mark the band has left beyond it.
