One of the defining music stories of the 1990s has found its way to the big screen. Liam and Noel Gallagher attended the Venice Film Festival on September 5 for the world premiere of Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger, a documentary tracing the band’s reunion.

A rock-star arrival in Venice

The Gallagher brothers arrived by water taxi, greeting the crowds waiting for them. Liam described the Venice atmosphere as “biblical” in his unmistakable style, while Noel kept his response brief and Italian: “Bellissimo.”

More than a concert film

Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, the documentary looks beyond the spectacle of Oasis’s comeback shows. It follows the band’s return and the brothers’ gradual reconciliation, 16 years after the backstage row in Paris that brought Oasis to an end in 2009.

Previously unseen rehearsal footage, backstage material and the brothers’ first joint interview in roughly 25 years are among the film’s highlights.

The cameras stay with the band from the earliest rehearsals through the world tour’s vast stadium shows. Rather than steering events, the directors chose to observe Liam and Noel as the distance between them began to close.

From the 1990s to a new generation

Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis became the sound of an era with Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, their influence reaching well beyond Britpop.

“Wonderwall”, “Live Forever”, “Don’t Look Back in Anger” and “Champagne Supernova” continued to find listeners long after the band split in 2009. When the reunion tour opened in Cardiff in 2025, tens of thousands of fans from different generations gathered in front of the same stage — a reminder of how deeply those songs still resonate.

Steven Knight, who is credited with the documentary’s screenplay, describes a story rooted in reconciliation, forgiveness and brotherhood, as well as the return of a major rock band.

In cinemas on September 11

Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger is scheduled to open in selected cinemas and IMAX venues on September 11. A Disney+ release is also planned for later in the year.

The Oldies Radyo take: The Oasis reunion is a reminder that songs can outlast even the bands that made them. Liam and Noel may have spent years apart, but “Live Forever” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” kept connecting millions of listeners throughout that silence.
