A transition year between 1980s pop and the alternative 1990s
1990 still carried much of the polished production of the previous decade, but hip-hop, house, alternative rock and new forms of R&B were gaining ground quickly.
Dance and house expand
Club-oriented production moved further into mainstream pop, while acts such as Snap! helped give Eurodance an early international profile.

Rap was no longer a novelty market. Regional styles, political voices and increasingly polished production were all expanding at once.
