Zawinul and Shorter
Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter built the group around composition, atmosphere and ensemble interaction rather than long displays of individual virtuosity.
Jaco Pastorius and the late-1970s sound
Jaco Pastorius’s arrival transformed the role of electric bass through harmonics, melodic lead playing and a highly distinctive tone. Heavy Weather and “Birdland” brought fusion to a much wider audience.
