Rock / Art Rock / Arena Rock · 1970s Career
The Who entered the 1970s with Tommy behind them and expanded into a more mature form of rock built around concept albums, synthesizers and enormous live performance.
Who’s Next
Born from Pete Townshend’s abandoned Lifehouse concept, Who’s Next used synthesizer patterns, hard guitar and Keith Moon’s explosive drumming to create one of the decade’s defining rock albums.
Quadrophenia
The 1973 rock opera returned to Mod culture through the story of a young fan struggling with identity, class and disillusionment. It became one of Townshend’s most ambitious works.
Live power and loss
The band remained a major concert attraction, but Keith Moon’s death in 1978 ended the classic lineup and closed one of rock’s most volatile partnerships.
Why they matter
The Who helped connect 1960s youth rebellion to 1970s arena rock, while Townshend’s concept-album work expanded rock storytelling beyond the single song.
