Punk Rock · 1970s Career

Ramones stripped rock back to speed, repetition and short songs at a moment when mainstream rock was becoming increasingly elaborate. Their leather-jacket image and deliberately simple attack helped define American punk.

CBGB and New York punk

The band emerged from the CBGB scene alongside artists who were rejecting arena-rock excess in very different ways. Ramones chose economy: fast tempos, minimal solos and songs often finished in little more than two minutes.

The debut

The 1976 self-titled album became a blueprint for punk despite modest initial sales. “Blitzkrieg Bop” captured the group’s entire aesthetic in one chant-driven burst.

Why they matter

Ramones influenced punk scenes worldwide and proved that attitude, discipline and clarity could matter more than virtuosity.
