Disco / Funk · 1970s Career

KC and the Sunshine Band brought a bright Miami funk sound into the disco mainstream through horn-driven arrangements, simple hooks and relentlessly danceable rhythm.

The Miami sound

Working with producer and songwriter Richard Finch, Harry Wayne Casey built records around bass, horns, percussion and repetition rather than elaborate lyrical narratives.

Major hits

  • Get Down Tonight — the breakthrough.
  • That’s the Way (I Like It) — one of disco’s defining chant-driven hits.
  • Shake Your Booty — direct dance-floor pop.
  • Boogie Shoes — compact disco-funk later boosted by Saturday Night Fever.

Why they matter

The group helped make Miami one of the decade’s important dance-music centers and showed how funk could be streamlined into mass-market disco without losing rhythmic punch.
