Arena Rock / AOR · 1970s Career
Journey began as a more progressive, instrumental-minded rock band and gradually evolved into a polished arena-rock act built around strong melodies and Steve Perry’s soaring voice.
Early progressive roots
The original lineup grew from the San Francisco rock scene and emphasized musicianship and extended arrangements more than pop singles.
Steve Perry changes the direction
Perry joined in 1977 and helped move Journey toward more concise songs. Infinity and “Lights” revealed the melodic AOR identity that would dominate the next decade.
Why they matter
Journey’s late-1970s transformation created one of the clearest bridges from progressive rock musicianship to 1980s arena-pop songwriting.
