Progressive Rock / Art Rock · 1970s Career
Genesis became one of the defining progressive-rock bands of the 1970s by combining complex arrangements, literary concepts and theatrical performance with a distinctly English sense of storytelling.
The Peter Gabriel era
Albums such as Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound established the band’s elaborate style, while Gabriel’s costumes and stage characters made concerts part theatre and part rock performance.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
The 1974 double concept album pushed the Gabriel-era group to its most ambitious narrative scale before his departure.
Phil Collins takes the lead
After Gabriel left, drummer Phil Collins became lead singer. A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering proved the band could continue successfully while gradually moving toward a more concise sound.
Why they matter
Genesis helped define progressive rock’s theatrical and narrative side while also creating one of the most important bridges from 1970s prog into 1980s pop-rock.
