Heavy Metal / Hard Rock · 1970s Career
Black Sabbath gave heavy music a darker identity than any major rock band before them. Tony Iommi’s riffs, Geezer Butler’s ominous lyrics, Bill Ward’s heavy swing and Ozzy Osbourne’s eerie voice helped define the basic language of heavy metal.
Birmingham and industrial heaviness
The group emerged from Birmingham, a city whose industrial environment fit naturally with their slower tempos, distorted guitar and bleak atmosphere.
Paranoid and the breakthrough
“War Pigs,” “Paranoid” and “Iron Man” made the band internationally famous while establishing themes of war, alienation and fear as central heavy-metal subjects.
Riff as architecture
Iommi’s guitar writing often built entire songs around short, memorable riffs rather than blues improvisation alone. That structural approach became fundamental to metal.
Why they matter
Black Sabbath did more than make hard rock heavier. They created a distinct musical and emotional vocabulary that later doom, stoner, thrash and alternative metal would all inherit.
