Al Green defined one of the smoothest and most intimate forms of 1970s soul. Working with producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records in Memphis, he built records around light rhythm, warm horns and a voice capable of moving from whisper to falsetto in a single phrase.

Mitchell’s production left space around Green’s voice, making groove feel relaxed rather than aggressive. The rhythm section, organ and horns supported emotional nuance instead of competing with it.
