Small Faces were one of the purest musical expressions of British Mod culture. Steve Marriott’s soulful voice, Ronnie Lane’s songwriting and the band’s compact power connected American R&B to sharp London style.
Mod roots
Early records such as “Whatcha Gonna Do About It” and “All or Nothing” combined soul influence with direct guitar-band energy, making the group favorites of the Mod audience.
Into psychedelia
By 1967–1968, the band embraced studio experimentation and whimsical psychedelia. Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake became their most ambitious album and a cult classic of British psychedelic rock.
Why they matter
Small Faces created a bridge from Mod R&B into psychedelic and later hard-rock traditions. Marriott’s voice and stage presence were especially influential on British rock singers.
