Chanson / Art Pop · 1960s Career

Serge Gainsbourg became one of the decade’s most provocative French songwriters by combining chanson, jazz, pop, irony and increasingly experimental production.

From jazz-influenced chanson to modern pop

Gainsbourg’s early work drew from Left Bank chanson and jazz, but he gradually moved toward the youth-pop world, writing songs for artists such as France Gall while developing a more cinematic personal style.

Provocation and ambiguity

His writing often depended on double meanings, literary references and a deliberately uncomfortable public persona. By the late 1960s, recordings such as “Je t’aime… moi non plus” made controversy part of his artistic identity.

Why he matters

Gainsbourg helped move French chanson toward art pop, studio experimentation and a more openly adult lyrical language that influenced generations of European musicians.
