Baroque Rock / Progressive Rock Roots · 1960s Career

Procol Harum brought classical atmosphere, blues-based rock and literary imagery together in a way that helped define the emerging language of progressive and art rock.

“A Whiter Shade of Pale”

The group’s 1967 debut single became an international phenomenon. Its Bach-influenced organ line, mysterious lyrics and restrained vocal performance made it sound unlike almost anything else on the charts.

Beyond one famous song

Procol Harum continued exploring long forms, organ-and-guitar textures and a darker, more literary songwriting style that placed them between psychedelic rock, blues and the coming progressive era.

Why they matter

The band helped normalize classical influence and conceptual ambition inside rock without abandoning blues foundations or concise songwriting.
