Cream brought blues improvisation, virtuoso musicianship and psychedelic volume into one of the decade’s first true rock power trios. Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker each played with enough force to sound like a band much larger than three people.
Blues roots and virtuosity
Clapton’s guitar came directly from the British blues boom, while Bruce and Baker brought jazz-informed rhythm and improvisational freedom into the group.
Studio songs and extended live performances
“Sunshine of Your Love,” “White Room” and “Badge” showed strong songwriting and studio craft, while concerts stretched blues structures into long improvisational exchanges.
Why they matter
Cream helped establish the power-trio format and the idea that rock musicians could combine virtuosity with volume. Hard rock, progressive rock and heavy metal all inherited part of that model.
