Blues rock amplified American blues into a louder, more improvisational form of rock. British and American musicians stretched riffs, solos and twelve-bar structures into a style built for clubs, festivals and increasingly large venues.
British roots
John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Cream and Fleetwood Mac all emerged from Britain’s intense fascination with Chicago blues and electric guitar.
American expansion
Jimi Hendrix and other American players pushed blues language into psychedelic and hard-rock territory, adding feedback, extended improvisation and studio effects.
Why it matters
Blues rock became one of the direct foundations of hard rock and heavy metal while keeping the vocabulary of Black American blues at the center of guitar culture.
