Funk emerged in the second half of the 1960s as rhythm moved from supporting role to the center of the music. James Brown and his musicians stripped arrangements down, emphasized the first beat of the bar and treated guitar, bass, horns and drums as interlocking rhythmic parts.
From soul to groove
Earlier soul often depended on chord movement and gospel-style vocal drama. Funk increasingly reduced harmony and built intensity through repetition, syncopation and tightly organized ensemble rhythm.
James Brown’s revolution
“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag,” “Cold Sweat” and later recordings became key landmarks. Brown’s bands learned to treat every instrument like percussion while still leaving space for vocal cues and horn accents.
Why it matters
Funk became a foundation for 1970s Black popular music and later supplied the breakbeats and bass-driven structures that hip-hop and modern dance music repeatedly sampled and reinterpreted.
